Continued Learning & Certifications

Cybersecurity is a booming field, but landing your dream job can be tough without the right qualifications. Fueled by a thirst for cybersecurity knowledge, I'm on a mission to conquer the ever-evolving landscape. My journey started with the Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) by ISC2, building a rock-solid foundation in security fundamentals and practical skills. Google's Cybersecurity Certificate then ignited my passion, offering a structured path to master essential defense against cyberattacks. But the quest for mastery continues. Let’s dive into what makes certificates practical and more than just a piece of framed paper.

Certified in Cybersecurity badge

Certified in Cybersecurity (CC), ISC2 - September 2023:

The Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) by ISC2 isn't just a credential; it's a launchpad for a thriving career in cybersecurity, even if you're a complete beginner. It equips you with the core knowledge and practical skills employers crave, from understanding fundamental security concepts and managing risks to handling incidents and conducting forensic investigations. And coming from ISC2, the world-renowned cybersecurity authority, the CC carries serious weight with hiring managers globally.

Personally, taking the CC exam five years after my CompTIA A+ reignited my passion for expanding my technical expertise. Each domain tested provided a rock-solid foundation for my cybersecurity journey. If you're new to the field, the CC is a fantastic starting point. But even for seasoned IT veterans like myself, it's an excellent refresher and a chance to level up your understanding of security principles.

Google cybersecurity certificate badge

Google Cybersecurity Certificate - October 2023:

Crafted by Google's security veterans, this professional certificate empowers both aspiring and experienced professionals to master the essential skills needed to protect businesses and individuals from cyberattacks. Whether you're seeking a career transition or aiming to solidify your existing expertise, this program offers a comprehensive learning path to thrive in this ever-evolving field.

The CC rekindled my learning passion, but the Google Cybersecurity Certificate got me hooked. Knowing a structured program aligned with my learning pace was a game-changer. While they say it takes 6 months, I took a hyper-focused approach, I intended to double the recommended weekly hours to 14. Starting with 2 hours, I soon found myself immersed until 3am, finishing the 8-course series in just 8 days with a 93% average score. My experience might be unique, but this logically structured, engaging curriculum is perfect for self-paced learners. This comes with more than just a certificate, it also includes many job hunting resources not to mention they offer a great CompTIA Sec+ discount.

ITIL foundation badge

ITIL Foundation - November 2023:

While seemingly distant from the world of firewalls and malware, understanding ITSM best practices proves surprisingly valuable in cybersecurity. ITIL's focus on service delivery, incident management, and continuous service improvement translates directly to cybersecurity operations. Efficiently handling security events, minimizing downtime during breaches, and ensuring smooth incident response all flow seamlessly from an ITIL-aligned mindset. By understanding how to deliver IT services effectively, I'm better equipped to tackle the unique challenges of safeguarding those services from cyberattacks. So, whether I'm working on patching vulnerabilities or implementing security protocols, the ITIL principles form a crucial foundation for a successful career in cybersecurity.

comptia security+ badge

Security+, CompTIA - Coming Soon:

While the Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) by ISC2 opened the door to the world of cybersecurity, and the Google Cybersecurity Certificate turbocharged my skills, the journey doesn't end there. Next is taking the CompTIA Security+ certification, the industry-recognized gold standard for IT security professionals.

With my foundation from the CC and the hands-on training from Google, I'm primed to dive deeper into the technical aspects of security. Security+ promises to solidify my understanding of network security, cryptography, incident response, and risk management – areas I already touched upon but crave a more comprehensive grip on.

This isn't just about adding another feather to my cap, it's about building a well-rounded cybersecurity arsenal. Each certification contributes a unique piece to the puzzle, and Security+ promises to be the keystone, locking everything into place.

The CC, Google's certificate, and ITIL have equipped me with a diverse arsenal, each piece strengthening my defenses against the ever-shifting cyber landscape. Yet, the battle doesn't end with a conquered exam. The true test lies in continuous learning. Each credential is a stepping stone, a testament to dedication and a springboard towards the next level. But the real magic lies not in the paper certificates, but in the transformation they spark.

Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a newbie, remember, the most potent weapon in your arsenal isn't a fancy acronym, but your insatiable curiosity and determination to learn and grow. So, pick up your textbook, enroll in that course, and embrace the continuous upgrade.
